I just finished reading Poul Anderson's "Vault of the Ages", a 1952 novel of only 160 pages. This morning before I went to bed I finished up Peter David's "Howling Mad". I started reading Tim Berners-Lee's "Weaving the Web: The Original Design and the Ultimate Destiny of the World Wide Web". In fact it is an hour and a half later than when I first started writing the previous sentence because I stopped and read a hundred more pages.
I started reading Greg Bear's Hegira last night and finished it this afternoon.
I used a couple zip ties to fix the thing hanging down on the ground under the front of my car after letting it drag and act as a snowplow for a few days.
I also finished watching/reading/listening to all the special features of the Criterion Collection's Spartacus.
I've been working on my JavaScript test page a lot this evening. It even works when sent as application/xhtml+xml, which was mainly made to happen by replacing various .innerHTML with the more W3C DOM compliant .firstChild.nodeValue, which will only work if you are just replacing a text node with a text node, long strings of HTML elements are right out. It would be very nice if there was an .innerXML.
It has been snowing all day. I think there is about three or four inches on the ground. This is the most snow I have seen in my two years and two months here in Colorado Springs. The roads were bad when I went for blank DVD-Rs this afternoon. I wonder if my flight will leave on time. Mark is going to give me a ride to the airport in the morning so I can avoid $35 in long-term parking fees. I'm going to lend him my extra key so he can use my DVD burner to burn some of my anime. I'm currently washing clothes, cleaning up, and watching Ikkitousen.
I finished watching all of the anime Kanon, but slept most of today. I'm being such a lazy bum.
Yesterday at 2200 I went over the Hammans household, where Mark Kilsgaard also lives now, and watched all the first season of The Office. It was 40F when I left here at 2200 but was a warm 47F. I heard it is going to be in the 20's with a chance of snow this weekend.
I borrowed the Japanese movie Battle Royale on DVD from Mark. It was originally a novel about a class of 9th graders put on an island with random weapons and given three days to kill each other off.
For New Year's Eve I went over to
I just learned today that I'm going to be going TDY to San Antonio for the whole of next week for an advanced DITSCAP class.
I will probably be going TDY to Las Vegas for a two day.. something about national security threats.
I'm back in Colorado Springs. Parking at the airport for two weeks cost me $70, fucking highway robbery. I'll be sure to take a taxi from now on.
My digital camera is draining batteries even when it is off. I want a new one anyway.
I worked late tonight to finish up some work before I go on leave. I still haven't lifted a finger to clean this place, and zin should be here in four hours.

zin is coming to visit me at 3am Saturday morning on his way to freeze to death on the icy slopes of Winter Park. I should really clean up my room. I also need to clean up my hdd by burning DVDs since I am so low on space and zin is bringing me video.
Tomorrow is my last day of work until the 29th. I fly home on Monday. I need to install [VNC|RealVNC|TightVNC] so I can bittorrent from afar. The last episode of Survivor my not show up on SuprNova until after I leave. Maybe I should lower my resolution also. I don't think 1600x1200 would be too easy on VNC or my upload cap.
Snow was falling when I drove home from work yesterday. I hoped to wake up to at least a couple inches of snow, but no, not even a half an inch.
At work I was looking at browser stats and liked how the stats table looked. I checked out the html and stylesheet to see how it was done. I wanted to try it out on a page of mine, so did I save a page and edit it? Nope, I used the edit styles bookmarklet to edit my stylesheet live on the web. Any changes you make to the stylesheet shown in the window created by the bookmarklet take effect immediately. But to have my table look like the other one, I needed to set cellspacing="0" on my table. Did I then save it to disk and edit it? No, I just typed in a bit of JavaScript in the address bar (space/break added for readability): javascript:document.getElementsByTagName("table")[0] .setAttribute("cellspacing", 0);
Another excellent documentary series I'm downloading via BitTorrent is Carl Sagan's Cosmos.
Why isn't Max Headroom on DVD?
Revolver sent me a copy of Dark Age of Camelot with a week of free playing time. I'm not sure when I'll have time to play though.
John Carmack (a personal hero of mine and future savior of the human race) of Armadillo Aerospace is going to be using GPS for his company's spacecraft's auto-hover, auto-land, range safety, and altitude verification.
Last month I paid for my next six months of car insurance (liability only). It cost me $259. I figure it is cheaper for me to pay for any damage I do than to pay for collision. In all the years I have owned my car, I once did $1800 worth of damage to my car. Yet how much extra would full coverage have cost me? I wonder if my liability coverage would have gone up if I had had collision and made a claim.
<Serfer> did you pay your cable bill today? that's always good blog material
<phillip> I paid my telephone bill. :P
<phillip> Thanks for reminding me. It shall be noted. :P
This afternoon I did some volunteer work wrapping gifts at the BX to raise money for the 50 SCS booster club. But the deadline for submitting award packages for this quarter has already passed. I did get to play a bit of Cardboard Tube Samurai when a roll of wrapping paper was used up.
Yesterday I downloaded and watched the first four parts of the six part 1995 BBC documentary The Private Life of Plants presented by Sir David Attenborough. The use of lots of time lapse photography shows some really interesting plant movement. I'm downloading the last two segments now. Each segment is 49 min and 717 MiB. This DVD rip was done by MVGroup. To view this and other BBC documentaires, go to NovaSearch and search for BBC.
Someone stole one of my summer weight BDU pants from the laundry room yesterday. I was pulling on a pair of winter weight BDU pants this morning when I saw that it had someone elses laundry mark on it. The cleaners must have gotten them mixed up.
I've bought my round trip plane ticket from COS to JAN for $405 total from Expedia this time. I've just bought from Travelocity in the past, but this time their prices were too high. I checked Cheap Tickets also, but their site kept telling me that the flight was no longer available whenever I tried to buy one. I forgot to check Orbitz, but I just did now and they were $1 higher than Expedia.
Clay Jenkinson, the scholar who portrays Thomas Jefferson on The Thomas Jefferson Hour, said that the best single volume Thomas Jefferson biography is Thomas Jefferson and the New Nation: A Biography. I ordered a slightly used copy of this 1100 page book for $17.49 total from an Amazon Marketplace seller. See also: ISBN.nu. The best multi-volume Jefferson biography is the Pulitzer Prize winning six volume set by Dumas Malone.
While I was at Amazon I also purchased:
I'm going to reset my webstats logfile since it has grown to over 9 megabytes and is taking over six seconds to parse. But I hate to loose all that old data. Perhaps I can add something like an "add historical data" link. Code: webstats.cgi, webstats_log.cgi
Week 11 (episode 10) of Survivor finally showed up on SuprNova. This was the episode that aired a day early on Wednesday since Thursday was Thanksgiving. The Fields dropped by to watch it with me as they got out of a class a bit early here on Peterson and had forgot to set their VCR to record it. If I seem them tomorrow I'll take them the VCD of it that I have burned.
Upon rewatching it, maybe Jon should win even though he's a dick. He's a smart player and certainly has some balls pulling a fake dead grandmother. His [SWF]popularity is even more in the toilet though.

I just finished watching The Matrix: Reloaded for the first time. It was quite good. Maybe tomorrow evening I will try to catch Revolutions.
Now I'm wanting to watch Shogun. Ok, I just ordered the DVD box set for $55.99, and also the new Tenacious D - The Complete Master Works for $13.99 from Amazon. I have the three (or six depending on how you look at it) episodes of Tenacious D downloaded, but instead of taking the time to convert and burn them to DVD, I'll just bought the very affordable two disc DVD set.
DeepDiscountDVD beats Amazon by $.70 on Tenacious D, but Amazon beats DeepDiscountDVD by $1.74 on Shogun. Wal-Mart beats both of them on the price of Shogun, but those soulless fucks at Wal-Mart don't carry Tenacious D because it offends someone's values. Wal-Mart is the largest employer in Colorado. To review:
| Shogun | teh D | |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | $55.99 | $13.99 |
| DDD | $57.60 | $13.29 |
| Wal-Mart | $55.86 | soulless fucks |
The above table should be centered. It is in Firebird and Opera. The CSS used:
.article > table { margin: auto }
If you are one of the poor bastards still using Microsoft's Internet Explorer as your Web browser, it will not be centered for two reasons:
Which DVD menu layout is better, vertical or horizontal?
It is 9 degrees F outside and my heat does not work. Luckily my computar heats my room somewhat. It has been a long time since I have worn a sweater. I was thinking I could microwave various vessels of water and sit them around my room. I just looked outside and there is snow on the ground.
I had fun playing darts this afternoon at Rack & Tap at my supervisor's going-away.
I picked up the EXPO 2000 and EXPO 2001 anthologies.
At 1000 I had a cavity in an upper left molar filled. It really wasn't bad at all.
I have a new supervisor. The going away for my old supervisor is tomorrow at 1300 at Rack & Tap.
NASA recommends VIPS to load/view/manipulate such huge images as the 21600x21600, 245 MB TIFF I'm trying to work with.
parker pointed out these nice CSS float tutorials.
The Office, a BBC comedy, is quite good. I have seasons 1 and 2, both six episodes each. BitTorrent links: Season1. There are several different rips of season2, pick one on SuprNova's TV section. Check out the DVD I created from season 2.
zin won't be visiting me this month as he has postponed his Colorado ski trip because of a deficit of snow.
fRy has figured out why his RoadRunner usenet was sucking.
A couple of good Web design interviews:
I'm downloading via BitTorrent some huge resolution TIFFs from NASA's Blue Marble project that aard was able to get. They are the ones marked as being available upon request.
Update, 22 Nov: <aard> jesus, i've uploaded like 8 gigs of earth tiffs
Opera 7.22 was released a bit ago. It is mainly a security update (changelog), but there does seem to be a new feature. I happened to middle click in it, and it asked me what I wanted a middle click to do. I selected "Open in Background Page". (I'm on a one man crusade to change the practice of where to put the punctuation when a close quote appears at the end of a sentence.) I also just found the location of the option in the Mouse and Keyboard section of Preferences. I wonder how long it has been there.
One nice feature of Opera is the Ctrl-Alt-V keyboard shortcut that does a file form upload of the current page to the W3C Validator, which is handy on an intranet where you can't use a Validate bookmarket.
Fixed: Bug 224653 provide cross-platform NTLM auth implementation. This is really a dupe of the almost four year old bug 23679, but the guy who filed and implemented it wanted to avoid the spam of the old bug. I was glad when a win32 only NTLM auth was added previously so that I could access the base intranet.
Security bugs in Bugzilla that have recently come out from under confidentiality: 92773, 95735, 158049, 161546, 162584, 201839, 202994. These where referenced in past cvs checkins. Whenever I find a bug that I don't have permission to view, I throw it in my buglist. They show up later when they lose their confidentiality.

I'm currently using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031115 Firebird/0.7+ (Mike Tigas (Nova); MNG,DOMi,Venkman; G6;). It is a third party nightly build which is now being built hourly and comes with lots of goodies enabled such as MNG, DOM Inspector, JS Debugger, SVG, and the latest Shockwave Flash 7 plugin (I immediately went and installed the Flash Click to View extension).
floppaganda: Referrer Spamming and Fake Blogs.
I've noticed the exact same thing: same user agent, same referrers to similar fake blogs with random news stories as postings.
I went to work this morning because I forgot that I was taking today as a holiday. I worked on Veterens Day.
A few days ago, Slashdot reported that PBS has put the whole of Nova's The Elegant Universe series online. But the quality isn't that great, and it is only in either RealVideo or Quicktime. You can get this series in high quality on SuprNova in the TV section. Does gravity work instantaneously, or does gravity travel at the spead of light? I don't think I ever thought about that before.
Today was the first of a two day AFSCN class. I had trouble staying awake, but it is not a bad class. I arrived early and was looking for something to pass the time. In the breakroom was a bookcase with various fiction upon it. I chanced upon Michael Crichton's Timeline. It looked interesting, and I started reading it. I always like a good time travel story. I hear a movie was made of it. Yep, it will be in theatres on the 26th.
I just got back from playing co-op Serious Sam all the way through with JD and Rod. It took about six hours. Rod set up the game with gore set to "hippy," flowers took the place of blood. Sometimes it was hard to see enemies throught the clouds of flowers.
Wow, you can get both The First Encounter and The Second Encounter together as Serious Sam: Gold for only $13. The XBox port also contains both Encounters. Holy crap, there is some sort of Palm OS "port" of Serious Sam.
And speaking of games, the third patch for Rise of Nations has finally come out. Changelog.
The fansub groups Triad and AnimeOne are rereleasing the 13 episode Narutaru anime series as DVD rips. I guess the previous releases were TV rips. I just finished reading the first volume of the manga which is just a little different from the anime.
Other fansubbed anime I am downloading via BitTorrent:
Holy Christables, I've just got a crapload of anime, about 120 GiB. Here are some of the complete fansubbed series I have:
Ever wonder how many episodes there are in a series?
Check out my perfect DVD menu. It is upsetting that Ulead DVD MovieFactory at first says that there is plenty of space, but when I go to burn the DVD, there is not enough space. I outputted it to a DVD ISO and it is 5 GiB. I guess some of the processing enlarged it. So I'm going to have to cut it down to seven episodes on the first DVD, but that means splitting the two part episode between DVDs. If there are just 13 episodes, I think I could put the first 6 on the first DVD and the last 7 on the second DVD. Also, I was able to fix the sound in the first episode with TMPGEnc.
<^phillip> fRy, burning Survivor.

<^phillip> I think one of the strong guys is gone next time.
<fRy-> ^phillip: Damn, dude. You're going all out with the menues and shit. Do you download those off of torrent or something? :P
<^phillip> Yes.
<fRy-> Haha that's professional looking. :P
<fRy-> You go girl. :P
<^phillip> I made chapters, and picked menu images.
<^phillip> Also, found the episode titles online. :P
<fRy-> You ought to get the theme. :P
<^phillip> I did. :P
<fRy-> And fucking make it play during the title menu. :P
<^phillip> It is the bg music. :P

<fysa__> Haha. :P

<fRy-> Moviefactory rules. :P
<fRy-> Now just get a camcorder and install pinnacle studio. :P
Driving home from work on this fine Veterans Day holiday, I had to avoid the herds of tumbleweed crossing the highway at high speed. A large one became embeded in my grill right before I turned off the highway.
As I was driving home, a spider appeared on the inside of my windshield. He move about seemingly looking for the best position to leap upon my face. I calmly continued to drive while plotting his demise.
ABC [ Yet Another Bittorrent Client ] is an excellent BT client (screenshot). I've switched to it from BT++.
It has been reported that the MPAA is sending letters demanding $1500 to not be sued to pepole seeding new movies on SuprNova. SuprNova is THE high profile BT site, so be careful out there. I mostly download anime that is unlicensed by any US corporation.
NovaSearch is the SuprNova search engine.
My supervisor is PCAing to 4 SOPS. I've been his troop for over 120 days, so he has to write an EPR on me. I was thinking that more EPRs would be better when testing for promotion, but looking at the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) formula, you get the full 135 possible points for EPRs whether you have one firewall 5 EPR or ten of them.
I'm picking up half the of Equipment Custodian (EC) duties, which is basically keeping track of the computers (ADPE) in our office, picking up new computer equipment, and turning in old equipment.
We had a Web Review Committee meeting today. We mainly focused on the Air Force Portal. I just registered. It looks like total crap in a Gecko based browser. WORST CSS EVAR. And they must be trying their hardest to violate Section 508. There is an Air Force Instant Messenger that encrypts messages, is Java-in-browser based, and licensed from Bantu. The FAQ said that it could connect to the Yahoo and MSN IM networks, but I couldn't figure out how.
Well, Adelphia is fucking me. You have to pick a "valuepak" now. I was paying $20 a month for 72 cable TV channels and $50 a month for Internet access for a total of $70. The lowest priced advantage pack for the same service is $85. Basically, they jacked up the price of my cable TV to $42. I'm getting nothing more but my bill is going up $20 a month. Value my ass. I may just cancel my cable TV and pay $52 a month for just Internet access.

Today, instead of WarFit, I went by the clinic here on Peterson to pick up my immunization records for my mobility folder. While I was there they gave me a flu shot.
It turns out that I am on AEF 4, but won't go anywhere unless they get extra taskings or someone can't go or something. I wouldn't mind going to a tax free zone in the Middle East sometime after April. That way I could get my approximatly $40,000 reenlistment bonus tax free. If I decide to reenlist that is.
I've got a two day Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) course coming up in the middle of this month.
I know I have it pretty good after reading some of this guy's weblog.
Two weekends ago I replaced my old speakers with the new ones I bought several months ago. They sound very nice, even with my plain old stereo sound card.
On Friday Moneo asked for a copy of ogghtml.pl, which was originally a shell script that he wrote before I converted it to Perl and added MP3 support. He added FLAC support and it is now musichtml.pl.
Friday evening I went over to the Fields' apartment. Did a bit of computer work: updated their Firebird and Thunderbird, they do use thunderbird for email; played a couple good games of darts. I really enjoy darts. I had to drive very slowly to get home safely. The roads were iced over up north, lots of cars on the side of the road.
Last night I went over to the Allen's house. Bit of computer work, couple good games of foosball.
Light freezing rain and sleet have been falling today. I had to scrape a layer of ice from my car windows before leaving for work at 0730 when it was 30 degreess (-1 Celsius). It was 28 degrees when I left work at 1400. Early release was authorized by the Wing CC.
Schriever has switched cable providers. Now instead of CNN there is fucking Fox News on the TV at lunch.

I think making DVDs is going to be fun. This weekend I burned my first data DVD, and this morning I burned my first regular DVD: the first four episodes of Survivor 7. But the first episode was in a crappy AVI format with DivX 3 video and WMA 2 audio. The audio couldn't be converted by Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2/VideoStudio 7. All the other episodes are in VCD format. I'm using avi2vcd to convert it, but I think the audio still isn't going to be perfect. [2003.11.10 Update: Use TMPGEnc to convert AVIs to MPEG.] I'll try some other features of DVD authoring such as chapters and submenus when it finishes being converted. I think I can get five episodes on the disc after this since the first episode was longer than normal.
My Apex MD-100 DVD player didn't want to play the burned DVD this morning, but it played it this evening.
I fixed up a page of fRy's.

I borrowed a couple CDs from June to rip: "Stevie Nicks - 1981 - Bella Donna" and "Neil Young - 1972 - Harvest". Since I have more hdd space now, I decided to rip them to FLAC. FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It losslessly compresses audio meaning that it doesn't throw out any information to make the resulting file smaller, unlike lossy formats such as Ogg Vorbis, MP3, or Windows Media Audio. Since it is lossless, resulting file sizes are larger than lossy formats. In this case, Neil Young - Harvest is 190 MB as FLAC compared to 48 MB as quality 6 Ogg Vorbis.
FLAC has been developed for several years. Originally it was under the GNU LGPL but changed to a modified BSD license. FLAC joined Xiph.Org in January 2003.
FLAC command line (thanks, Moneo) for use in CDex: -8 -V -T artist="%a" -T album="%b" -T title="%t" -T date="%y" -T tracknumber="%tn" --replay-gain -o "%2" "%1"
Support was recently added OggEnc so you can transcode FLAC directly to Ogg Vorbis while preserving comments.
I didn't get my government travel card before my TDY, so I paid for it out of my pocket: $895 for the class and $207 for the hotel. I filed my travel voucher for reimbursment today. It was surprisingly easy (of course this was only a two day TDY). They wanted three copies of the travel voucher (DD Form 1351-2), three copies of my orders, and a copy of my reciept for the course registration. I should also get paid a perdiem and 37 cents a mile X 65 miles X 2. The money should be direct deposited into my account within three to five days.
Class wrapped up at 15 til 3pm yesterday. I visited the only Micro Center in Colorado afterwards. I guess it is sort of like a Fry's. Here is what I bought:
fRy has been saying this is the best DVD burner for a long time.
<fRy-> ^phillip: Excellent choice. Honestly. You did good. :P
<fRy-> I'd like to suggest Princo brand media from qtccdr.com or allmediaoutlet.com :P
<^phillip> Never heard of it.
<fRy-> Most haven't except for us hardcore DVD types. :P
<fRy-> It's white label and compatible on just about fucking everything.
<Caqula> princo sucks :P
<fRy-> Works in all Xbox/DVD Players/Etc. :P
<fRy-> I've never not had Princo work in anything. I've had Ritek fail in a lot of clients' settop dvd players and machines. :P
<Caqula> They have WHITE TOPS. :P
<fRy-> I like white tops. Sharpies work bettar on them. :P
I went to a King Soopers grocery store for the first time during lunch today. I bought OJ and chocolate milk. I used the self checkout. That was cool.
After class, Deb, Darrell, and I went to a nearby mall. Quite a large mall, but the only stores that interested me were Sam Goody, where I should have bought Neil Young's Harvest for $10, and Waldenbooks, where I bought Dragonball manga volumes 8 and 9 for $8 a piece.
No computer here, though this is one of the few times I wish I owned a laptop. They have free high speed net access here in the suites. And the suites are very nice. A suite with three sinks and two TVs for $92 a night. There are even on demand movies and pr0n on the TV. But at $12 they are overpriced and I didn't order anything.
I read the first fifty pages of Peter David's Howling Mad last night. It is able a wolf that gets bitten by a werewolf and turns into a human during the full moon.
In a few hours I'm going on my first TDY. It is only for two days in Denver for an NSA sponsored class called INFOSEC Assessment Methodology (IAM). It seems it is being taught by Security Horizon. I'm staying at the Embassy Suites that the class is being held at.
I just finished up this SVG article:
Ways to Include SVG in a Web Page
It turns out that everyone at work using IE should have Adobe's SVG Viewer version 2.0 installed. How? Adobe distributed it with Acrobat Reader 5.
I think almost all SVG documents shoud define a viewBox and include preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid meet" on their root element so they shrink or expand to fill the viewport. I added it to my first SVG. I think the cute lion could also benefit from these changes.

I just finished watching the 12th and last episode of Nanaka 6/17. Though I hear there is an OAV that has come out. It is a pretty good series (at 2.33 GiB).
This evening I installed and played six hours of Age of Mythology. It is an OK RTS game, but I really miss some of the features of Rise of Nations such as being able to tell a unit to auto-explore the map and peons auto-gathering or building instead of just standing around forever. I haven't installed the expansion yet. Maybe it fixes some of these things like the AOE2 expansion did.

I saw an article on Slashdot about KSVG being included in KDE 3.2 that got me excited about SVG again.
I started reading through the SVG 1.0 specification last night. I planned at first to try to convert a complicated Flash to SVG, which I still want to attempt, but decided it would be better to start with something simpler. I thought of the logo of the just past NATO Ministerial. The original 122 KB PNG; My 2 KB SVG.
On win32, the Adobe SVG Viewer 6.0 beta1 is the best Web browser plugins for viewing SVG. It auto-installs it for IE, but for Firebird you need to copy the two files from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SVG Viewer 6.0\Plugins into your plugins directory.
Mozilla's native SVG support is not quite as good as Adobe's plugin. Mainly lacking support for some text properties and animations.
Two other recent SVG stories at Slashdot:
You can see the advantage of vector graphics by comparing these screenshots of KDE's Konqueror to Microsoft's Longhorn. Longhorn is supposed to have some sort of vector graphics capability.
Thank god the NATO crap is over. The long hours and hard labor were wearing me out. We finished the breakdown today, which went a lot faster than putting it all together. We were working as free labor for ASET, an interpretation/translation company. There is going to be a party tomorrow at 7pm at a Korean restuarant on Academy.
NATO has a great page on the meeting with photos, transcripts, and MP3s.
Update: 10/16 6:00 AM: The above is not meant as derogatory towards ASET in any way. ASET is a fine company with wonderful, extremely hard working employees. Everyone said they did an excellent job at the NATO ministerial. I would recommend them to anyone who needs translation or interpretation work done.

Back from the Broadmoor after 13 hours. I'm in pain all over from the intense manual labor. I hope I make it home in time to see Survivor tomorrow. Otherwise I'll just download it via bittorrent the next day.
I canceled my CodeNet.net dialup account today. I got two years of good service from them. So my old email address of pms[at]codenet.net is gone. I guess until I call and get a username from Adelphia I'll use pms[at]pms[dot]colonpee[dot]com or pmsyyz[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Afterwards, I headed to get an oil change and on the way stopped at Media Play, where I bought three books and a DVD; Best Buy, where I bought a 160 GB hdd for $159; and Cold Stone Creamery, where I bought ice cream to eat during my oil change. The goods:
The local public television station, KBDI, is playing Doctor Who! 1970's "Spearhead from Space," Part 1 of four. A new Doctor emerges from the TARDIS and investigates a shower of meteorites plaguing England. This was the first color episode of Doctor Who and the first to feature Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor. Not from the Tom Baker period, my favorite, but still quite entertaining. I'll have to make sure I catch the conclusion later tonight. Too bad 109 Doctor Who episodes are probably lost forever. Doctor Who may be returning to TV soon.
"Pepsi Vanilla" is good. I hope it sticks around, which Crystal Pepsi was unable to do.
I downloaded Survivor 7.2, burned it to VCD, and watched it. Survivor 7 Participants Photos.
I forgot to turn on the TV to watch Survivor, but it should be on bittorrent later. I'm almost finished watching the first episode now. I just finished eating the tube of cake icing I bought at the Commissary.
Associated Press: 'Survivor' winner leaked? Betting raises eyebrows
Today was a day off. I slept til noon. I did get some stuff done today. I went to Military Clothing Sales and bought some new large dress socks, two new pairs of blues pants (33in waist), and ordered some new dress shoes.
Then I went to the Commissary and got some foodstuffs. I've been out of daily vitamins for a while, so I picked up some iron-free multivitamins. I had been living on peanut butter and cheese and water the last few days. I was feeling weak last night because of the lack of sugar so I ate five tablespoons of sugar. I was actually feeling lightheaded after standing up for an hour talking to Maj A.
I woke pretty late this morning at nine til seven. I made it to work at 0750, twenty minutes late.
I'm glad I'm taking a pass day tomorrow, as thing have been very busy at work lately.
I noticed that a new season of Survivor has started. Thank god for bittorrent. I was able to find a copy of the first episode.
I'm taking a pass day on Thursday. It has been really busy at work this week. I have lots to do tomorrow.
zin has rearranged the keys on his keyboard and is learning Dvorak. I recommend using GNU Typist aka gtypist. Win32 binaries are available.
Doom 3 in 2004. Half-Life 2 pushed back until the holidays. And I was looking for something to make me upgrade my computer. A 2.6GHz Pentium 4 with an 800Mhz bus is going for around $200. I definitely need to buy a large hdd or DVD burner as I have downloaded 100 GBs in the last 44 days.

CNET News.com: Adobe e-doc format under siege. PDF competition? Talks about Autodesk's Design Web Format (DWF), which I've never heard of nor seen before and Macromedia FlashPaper, which can only be generated by Contribute 2. A direct link to the flashpaper so you can view it in your full browser window seems much more useful just embedded in a page. You don't see PDFs being embedded in a small section of a page.
The guys in my shop left work at 1300 for an offsite get together at Rack 'n Tap (whose website must have been created by the same people who do the websites for FM rock radio stations, ZING!). After changing clothes, I got there at about 1425. I played a game of pool, and then learned how to play darts. Darts was lots of fun, but my arm is quite sore. I went next door and bought five $1 comics. When I went back to Rack 'n Tap, only SSgt Driscoll and MSgt Auwae were left. They were sitting at a table discussing some stuff. I joined in and we had several hours discussion on religion, evolution, the origin of life, and what country was the most immediate threats to the USA. Of course both of them were in no shape to drive after this. MSgt Auwae's girlfriend came and got him, as they were supposed to go to movie earlier. I drove my SSgt Driscoll home.
There was a pretty nice Internet connected, touch screen jukebox. It claimed to have access to 130,000 songs. But it was pretty expensive. Seven songs for $5. The first song I played was Rush - 2112. I like to get my money's worth. Among the other Rush songs I chose were Natural Science and Cold Fire. They didn't have Hemispheres, so I couldn't play that. I should have played The Analog Kid and In The End.
It was 37 this morning. It is supposed to get down to 33 tonight. The heat is either broken or has not yet been turned on.

Microsoft InfoPath 2003 is a new application in Office 2003. It is used to gather information. You create a form (like a Web page, only proprietary) and information entered into it sent to a server (like a Web server, only proprietary). You can look at their usage scenarios and see how they would all better as Web applications. And your data won't be locked up in a proprietary format.
Today: Got a haircut. Picked up BDUs. Cleaned up SrA Allen's computer (BugBear and several spyware).
Slashdot: IT Training in the Military?
This morning I did an Information Assurance Assessment (IAA) of 50 MSG/SV with Mr. Nelson. The alternate UCM was a nice older woman who was the system admin for some of their systems. It is nice to talk to other computer people.
I ate lunch with the Fields. Rachelle is now a CCNA. She took the exam on Friday. NAT came up, but she didn't know what it was, but by golly she can subnet with the best of them. :D
I had a dentist appointment at 1330 for a regular cleaning.
I made it through the National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceromony this afternoon, but just barely. I was the Airmen flight, one of three. Uniform of the day: short sleeve blue shirt with ribbons, open collar. There is red V at the top of my chest. Kolsen and Golden both had to step out of the flight. The afternoon sun beat down on us without mercy. All that standing motionless is very taxing, the blood stagnates.
Christ, I need to get some new blues slacks. Mine were fitted late in BMT after I had lost a lot of weight, and they are tight as hell now.
I had to sew the button back on these shorts.
I finally cashed my $300 federal income tax return check after letting it sit around for five months.
My bank replaced my Visa with a Mastercard. Maybe it is a little cheaper for them.
I went running with Josh and Mark this evening.
Picked up the new Iron Maiden and Fleetwood Mac albums off bittorrent along with The Alan Parsons Project - The Definitive Collection.

Today I climbed up Mount Cutler (Maps: topo, aerial, trails) with Josh Hammans and Mark Kilsgaard. It was obvious that I was not in as good of shape as those two. It was steep as hell. I was breathing hard whereas they looked like they were taking a stroll. They also both had CamelBaks. I should buy one. It was really great weather. Nice and cool, sprinkling rain. No photos since no one brought a camera. I'll be sure to take mine next time. Some of the descriptions of the Mount Cutler Trail say it is only a mile, but if you go around the boulder it goes on for another couple miles to the top of the mountain.
Colorado Springs: Geocaching Guidelines City Parks & Open Space Areas
I went to Best Buy and almost bought a DVD burner and/or a 160 GiB hdd. I'm running low and disk space and am bittorrenting lots of anime. Then I went to Cold Stone Creamery for some ice cream. And finally to Media Play where I picked up the first volume of the Excel Saga manga.
I've asked to be put up for working something related to an upcoming NATO conference here in Colorado Springs.
It looks like my first TDY will be in January to Onizuka AFS in California to do Security Testing and Evaluation (ST&E)on their LAN.
I'm being put up for Airman of the Quarter. I need more volunteer work. I volunteered to be in the flight honoring POW/MIA day. I need to go by the Airman's Attic and see if they still need help on Saturdays.
It is proposed that a new group be created under the 50th Space Wing called the 50th Network Operations Group. Under it will be all squadrons related to operating the Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN). This includes the current two squadrons under the 50th Communications Group and 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Space Operations Squadrons which are currently under the 50th Operations Group. Approval for this must still come from AFSPC HQ and AF HQ since this is a non-standard configuration, two operations groups under one wing.
bigjim: Random Image
Now, when jim asked me for a script, I wondered for a second if he meant in Perl or JavaScript, and then I wrote it in Perl.
#!/usr/bin/perl -wT
print "Content-Type: text/html\n\n";
my @pickone = ("one.jpg", "two.jpg", "three.jpg");
my $therecanbeonlyone = $pickone[rand @pickone];
print qq[<img src="webcam/$therecanbeonlyone" alt="" />];
exit;
It seems he did actually want it in JavaScript.
<img src="image.jpg" alt="random photo" id="random" />
<script type="text/javascript">
var pickone = new Array('one.jpg','two.jpg','three.jpg');
var theone = document.getElementById('random');
theone.src = pickone[Math.floor(Math.random() * pickone.length)];
</script>
He's using the Perl version. I think this is much better since about 10 percent of users have JavaScript turned off or have non-JavaScript capable browsers.
Back from a nice three person LAN event. We played Rise of Nations. I think I caused armageddon the first two games. I'm happy that I won the last one.
I really need a DVD burner with all the stuff I'm downloading via BitTorrent.
Blogger's block.
I'm starting four day weekend. Friday is a "Family Day" in AFSPC and Monday is Labor Day. Monday is also RoN LAN day at SSgt Driscoll's place.
I need to update my Airman Assignment Preference Statement or Dream Sheet (AF Form 392). It lists the bases or country/regions you would like to go. There are overseas and CONUS sections. I didn't put anything in the overseas section in BMT. Here's what I've come up with for the overseas section now. If you leave any of the eight spaces blank, it means you will take any overseas location.
But I'm not at all sure this is what I want. I may put in some bases in Alaska, Germany, or Italy. I guess the main thing I need to update is my CONUS choices.
People can call me now that I'm not dialed up all the time. Sand Creek High School's computer just called to let me know that my son or daughter was absent two or more times today.

I reset my DU Meter totals ten days ago. Here are the new totals.
I paid my first Adelphia bill today ($50).
I just sent the author of Win32Pad five bucks through PayPal.
CNET's News.com: Rockin' on without Microsoft. What a great interview.
No WARFIT for me tomorrow. We've got an Information Assurance Assessment of 50 CES at 0800.
I can sign and/or encrypt email at work now. Card readers have been installed on all PCs. All DoD websites are supposed to be converted over to https soon. When using IE on the intranet I have to insert my CAC, selected a personal certificate, and enter my PIN. I hope there won't come a time when I can't use Firebird to access the intranet.
With the return of broadband, I have been able to experience BitTorrent as it was meant to be.

I'm using the BT++ client. I should try out the EXPERIMENTAL client.
Caqula recommends the burst! client.
I've mainly been downloading fansubbed anime.
When I signed up for cable Internet access with Adelphia on Tuesday, I also signed up for 70 cable TV channels for $20 a month. I'm watching a show on the NSA on the History Channel, and a double shot of Iron Chef is about to come on the Food Network.
Beginning self install of Adelphia high-speed Intarnet access.
Cable TV now active.

Just finished watching the first disc of Kodocha. The six DVD box set came in the mail today. Funny stuff.

When I get to work tomorrow I'll check the MRTG graphs and see if there is any noticable traffic.
I don't look so good. My face is splotchy red and peeling.
First on the agenda this morning was Warrior Fit. After that I mailed back to a guy in Utah the Ranma 1/2 box set that I got in the mail last week. He said he put the right one (reviews) in the mail yesterday.
Last night I was watching the DNA^2 two DVD set I bought. The subtitles are ok. I have not seen a case before like the one this has It is smaller than a normal one DVD case. It has a plastic protector like the FX cases. It is definately a Hong Kong and China targeted release having a standard Hong Kong features grid and Chinese characters on the back.
I ordered a couple DVDs from Amazon this morning also:
The Kodocha DVD box set I bought on eBay has shipped. Reviews on DiscountAnimeDVD.com
The IA office camping trip starts Thursday night and runs though Sunday. I plan to do some swimming and boating and read some books.
I have returned from Wal-Mart with camping supplies:
The tent says it sleeps four. I thought about buying the $15 6x5 kids tent and sleeping diagonally. I still need to buy food and pack.
I am drinking a Mexican soda that I bought in the ethnic foods section of Wal-Mart five months ago. It has been sitting in my fridge because of the lack of a bottle opener. I just noticed that the can opener I bought a month ago has a bottle opener on the end of it.
And just finishing up the folding and putting away of clean clothes.
I heard a rumor on Friday that non-maintenance workers may have to start wearing blues to the office. I don't care for that. BDUs are much more comfortable that blues (and my blues pants are too tight). I'm sure the SOPS people will continue to wear their even more comfortable fight suits.

Christ, I just did a google search, and my page was the first result.
Here is a silly photo of me at work.
This evening I visited Barnes and Noble, the mall, Media Play, Coldstone Creamery, and Wal-Mart. At Media Play I bought the first five Dragon Ball manga. Viz and Shonen Jump have come out with new editions that are slightly smaller and only cost $8 instead of $15.
I awake. I went to bed about 8pm last night after watching a couple episodes of the Irresponsible Captain Tylor which I had borrowed from Golden a few months ago.

I was soaked by rain and hailed upon when I left work yesterday. I picked up clean BDUs from the cleaners. I was half dry after going to the post office, getting a hair cut, and getting some groceries. I finally bought more light bulbs so I don't have to shave in the dark anymore.
I was offered BAH today. That's Basic Allowance for Housing. I should be able to move out of the dorms. BAH for E-4 without dependents in this zip code is $598. Plus I would be getting $242 in BAS. That's $840 more a month, but I would have to pay rent and utilities. BAH FAQ.
Thunderbird 0.1 was released today.
I bought an import Ranma 1/2 DVD box set that contains both seasons 1 and 2.

We had Warrior Fit this morning. An IA assessment of the 310th Space Group at 1400. I dropped off a set of BDUs at Galaxy Cleaners and bought groceries at the Commissary. Started burning DC games for the Bailey's. I've started rewatching The Vision of Escaflowne.
I testified, but his supervisor did not? Must have been part of some plea bargin. He pled guilty. He got 15 days in prison, $400 taken, and 30 days restricted to Peterson AFB. He'll probably be kicked out very quickly. If he is still in the Air Force five days after he gets out of prison I would be surprised.
I just update my Mozilla Firebird from the July 2nd build to the July 20th. There have been some very nice Firebird specific additions/fixes. Bug 133117 'Web Search for...' results should open in new tab rather than new window, has been fixed in Firebird. Autoscroll has been integrated into Firebird. I think I will grow to like it. I've always hated IE's implementation because it scrolls way too fast. I filed bug 213250 on autoscroll preventing middle-clicking on links in XML documents. Now that bug 195598 has been fixed, I guess the bug that bothers me most is bug 18333, XML Content Sink should be incremental, which prevent XML documents, such as my webstats, from displaying incrementally.
Adobe has released a win32 only beta of their SVG Viewer version 6. Version 3 was the last released, but it has a long standing problem of crashing Mozilla.
The closing ceremony for Perterson AFB children's baseball teams just completed. I took some photos which I will put up in a bit. The kids got trophies except for the oldest group which got bat bags. Coaches got keychains. A kid passed out from dehydration or heat exhaustion. He got better after getting something to drink in the shade. Four police vehicles, one fire truck, and an ambulance came.
McClellend Award coins came in yesterday for everyone in the 50th Communications Group. Air Force-level Maj Gen Harold M. McClelland Award is for excellence in support of the Air Force mission by the best communications and information systems organization with more than 300 people.

The Mozilla Foundation has been created as a non-profit organization to steward Mozilla; mozilla.org has gotten a great new front page; and AOL has laid off most of the Mozilla hackers. This last point concerns me just a bit because the C++ guts of Mozilla are quite complicated and most of the people who really understand it well work at Netscape.
Bug 70030, Cannot stop animation with stop button or escape key, was fixed earlier this month. It doesn't really matter anymore since I disable GIF animation (set image.animation_mode to 'none' in about:config), but I remember hitting the Escape key all the frickin time in Netscape and then IE years ago.
The bug that most annoys me these days is bug 195598, browser does not repaint parts of text and tables after scrollbar reflow. I see this a few times a day. It was fixed in the 1.4 branch, but not the trunk.
I'm going to the 43rd Annual Colorado Springs Street Breakfast in the morning at the corner of Pike's Peak and Tejon. It kicks off the Pike's Peak or Bust Rodeo (whose website has fallen off the 'net).

Hmm, I don't have my sleeping bag here in colorado.
I think this next paragraph is all rumor (I'd blockquote it, but I need to fix up my blockquote style):
No this is not a joke. Team Robins has been selected as a test site for the new Blue BDU's. Pic shows what they look like. Some of us will start wearing them in Jan 04. No more starching or pressing, wash and wear like the old fatigues. Not sure what to think. Here is the new uniform, if you haven't heard we are going to blue BDU's. Robins AFB has been selected as a test base. The V on the hat is the Air Force symbol. If you don't believe me, the official announcement will be in August. We start wearing this uniform in Jan 04. Also a rigging belt will be worn, you can see it on the first two females.

Some rumor control from the Command Chief:
Well, that's about it - should answer some of your questions about this subject. I'll gladly answer any questions regarding this subject. Just remember, it's in a test phase right now, lots could change before the final approved product hits the field.

Friday evening Kilsgaard came by and woke me from a 45 minute nap to go see The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Menacho and his girl, Hammans and his wife, Rainia, and a Peterson tech controller were all there to see it also. It is an ok movie adaptation, but I would suggest getting the trade instead if you haven't read it.
After the movie we all went over to the Hammans residence and watched episodes of Red Dwarf, though I spent most of the time playing with their six month old black cat.
My computer froze this evening for the first time in a while. I was playing Rise of Nations. I think it was heat related even though I had the air conditioner on. I removed the CPU fan and washed a lot of dust from it.
I was thinking of when Seinfeld would come out on DVD, and then I see someone asking when Seinfeld would be finished uploading to an FTP. I ask which Seinfeld, and he says all 180 episodes. I downloaded the first one. At ~40 MB an episode, they aren't the best quality.

I just caught the 12:10 showing of 28 Days Later at Carmike 10. It was pretty good, and I was the only one there, a whole showing just for me. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen opened today. I'll probably see it this evening.
Yesterday's tee ball practice was fun even though only four kids showed up. The gate was locked with a chain, so I played catched with three of them for twenty minutes before we just went under it. Each got a turn at batting.
The Schriever Base Picnic is tomorrow.

I took half a pass day this afternoon to do some errands, also because I was tired as hell at work. I took three pairs of old jeans that were too tight to Goodwill, got a haircut, and washed my car.
I think I'll go see The Incredible Hulk at 4:05 at the Carmike 10.
I caught the 8pm showing of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines with Kilsgaard. It was good.
In other movie news, N!xau, the Bushman or San star of The Gods Must Be Crazy series of movies has died.
Some sort of power dip a few hours ago killed my connection. Actually I think it killed my ISP's connection. I was in the middle of a good three on three Rise of Nations game with Mukluk and josh. I can dial up and revolve my ISP's hostnames, but I can't resolve or reach anthing on the Internet. I should try to find a better local ISP.
I just had two bowls of Cheerios for the first time in a long time. Covered with sugar. Yum.
I just had a bowl of tuna fish for the first time in a long time. Yum. I could eat it right away because I need my cans of tuna in the fridge, whereas my mom always kept the cans of tuna in the cupboard, and I had to chill it in the fridge for a few minutes after mixing in the tablespoon of mayonnaise. I couldn't find any Blue Plate at the store, so I went with Kraft.
A pretty uneventful day. I was falling asleep driving home. The heat, you understand.
